Are Mexican Dentists as gentle as American Dentists?
Absolutely. Dental phobia often causes people to "chicken-out".
An estimated one half of the population of the U.S.
forego regular check - ups, and only see a dentist when
a tooth aches. An estimated 9-15% of all Americans avoid
needed care because of anxiety and fear. This translates
to some 30 - 40 million people afraid to go to a dentist
in the U.S. In Algodones dentistry is pain free even "the
needle." No one on our post appointment e-evaluation
form has ever complained to MexAdvantage about pain
during a procedure.
Why Algodones?
The easy answer is: dental rates are lower - much lower.
Medical and/or Dental procedures in Algodones are 70%
less, and most 75% less than like procedures in the U.S
and Canada.
But isn't that true all over Mexico?
Yes it is, but what makes Algodones special; is the "easy
in" & easy out" factor. Algodones evolved all by itself
into, what might be, the world's most patient friendly
dental destination. On the U.S. side The Quechan Indian
Nation bumps up against the Mexican border. You drive on
Indian land for two miles to reach Algodones. On the
Mexican side you have a town growing out of its britches
because of a phenomenal demand for first-rate dental
services at reasonable prices. Where once, not too many
years ago, there was one dentist in the five downtown
blocks of Algodones there are now over 350. The Quechan
Nation saw a good thing, and built a humongous parking
lot to accommodate the flood of cars to the border. The
parking lot ($3. per car,) is paved, well lit, and
secure. You can safely walk to any dentist in minutes
from the parking lot, The Quechan Indians have now
completed a second parking lot to accommodate the
thousands who enter Algodones daily. Even from the new
lot it is possible to walk to the furthest dental/medico
office in ten minutes. Overnight parking is $20.
Are Mexican dentists well trained?
Mexico takes pride in its Dental Colleges; all dentists
represented on this site meet high standards in
professionalism and academic training, plus continuing
education (which is often in the United States,).
autoclave sterilization and sanitation procedures that
meet western standards
Do Mexican dentists have up to date equipment?
Yes, just like the U.S.
Do you speak English?
Usually someone in the
office speaks English quite well - language is not a
problem.
Why are they cheaper?
Dental offices are usually less elaborate than U.S
counterparts. Office space and waiting rooms are much
smaller. Office help and dental assistants are much less
expensive. Dentists pay no malpractice insurance.
Economic expectations are less.
Can I pay the dentist with a check?
We prefer cash or travelers checks at least until they
know you well. If you will be making multiple visits
dealing with dental prosthetics, generally 50% of the
estimated total cost is required at the end of the first
visit.
Can I use my credit card?
No.
How long does it take to drive to Los Algodones from
Yuma?
Fifteen minutes.
Is it easy to drive into Los Algodones?
Yes, very.
Is it easy to drive out of Los Algodones?
Not always-sometimes (frequently) a long line of border
crossing traffic builds up when crossing time is lengthy
in the neighboring town of San Luis.
Does my American/Canadian car insurance protect me in
Mexico?
No. You need insurance purchased from a Mexican company.
I have a great fear of dentists. Can I be put to sleep?
Yes. But Mexican law requires that an anesthesiologist
(M.D.) do it and that is an added cost to your dental
procedure. Of course it is an added cost in the United
States too. Some dentists recommend taking 10 mg of
Xanax or Vallium 30 minutes prior to the procedure, to
take away anxiety.
Is there danger in going to Los Algodones? Mexico?
No. Dental patients are the economic "bread and butter"
of town. Los Algodones is one of the most
tourist-protected places in Mexico. The regular police
plus "tourist police," watch over you.
What is
tooth whitening?
Its actually a bleaching process that lightens
discoloration of enamel and dentin. The system uses a
mild solution retained in a custom-fitted tray that is
worn over your teeth.
What causes tooth
discolouration?
There are many causes. The most common include aging,
consumption of staining substances (i.e. coffee, tea,
colas, tobacco), trauma, staining, nerve degeneration,
and old restorations. During tooth formation,
consumption of tetracycline or excessive fluoride may
also cause tooth discoloration.
Who may benefit from tooth
whitening?
Almost anyone. However, there are some cases where the
treatment may not be effective. We can determine viable
candidates for the process through a thorough oral
examination and diagnosis. Tooth whitening is ideal for
patients who have healthy, unrestored teeth and would
like to have a whiter, brighter smile.
Why is the tooth whitening
process unique?
New breakthrough technology allows you to whiten your
teeth comfortably and effectively, in only two 30 minute
applications per day. For example, you can whiten while
driving to work or watching your favorite TV show.
How does it work?
The tooth whitening gel is placed in a thin bleaching
tray that fits over your teeth. As the active ingredient
in the gel, hydrogen peroxide, is broken down, oxygen
enters the enamel and dentin and bleaches the coloured
substances. Only the tooth colour is made lighter, while
the structure of the tooth is unchanged.
Is the process safe?
YES! Research and clinical studies indicate that
whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide under the
supervision of a dentist is safe for teeth and gums. In
fact, many dentists consider this whitening process the
safest cosmetic dental procedure available today.
How long does it take?
Results are often seen after the first application.
Ideal results generally occur when the process is
continued for 10 to 14 days. And faster results may be
obtained with more frequent application and/or longer
wear periods (i.e. over 1 hour per day).
Are there any side effects?
Some people experience temporary tooth sensitivity to
cold during the treatment. These symptoms usually
disappear within 1-3 days after interruption or
completion of the treatment.
How long do the results last?
The teeth will always be lighter than they were. However,
some patients may need periodic re-whitening for one or
two days every one to two years, especially if they
continue to use staining substances like caffeine or
tobacco products.
